In another big embarrassment to the government and a bigger embarrassment to India the two Italian marines who were on trial for killing of two fishermen from Kerala were sent to their respective homeland Italy for casting their votes have now been protected by their home country and the Italian government have refused to send the marines back to India for trial.
The marines Massimilian Lattore and Salvatore Girone, were part of a Military security team aboard a cargo ship when they opened fire on 2 fishermen they thought to be pirates, and he Italian government argues that the shooting had taken place in International waters hence they be tried in Italy rather than in India. But the Indian side of the story is that the fishermen were killed in Indian waters and they should be tried in India.
Whatever the version of the story that is true the fact remains India, often termed as a soft power has in actuality been too soft on international convicts, and somehow they are able to get away. be it Warren Anderson who was the chairman of Union carbide and had conveniently managed to escape from India and avoid trial that has been going for 23 years now and also Ottavio Quottrocci another Italian who was involved in the bofors scam also got away without any trial.
Not to sound judgmental but all of these happened during the congress regime, and very conveniently they all have escaped trial in India. the case of the marines in not new, it was bound to happen. We are no longer a nation to reckon with not that we have been reckoned in the last century but the fact remains is people must be tried and convicted for the crimes committed by criminals and irrespective of their nationality they should be tried and brought to justice. our law and order system is in complete shambles where there has been increasing reports of police insensitivity on solving cases be it rape or murder and they well reached criminals get away easily. In all probably the Indian govt might have been pressured to send back the marines by the Italian government and government would most likely have obliged them .i find it hard to believe that the government did not expect a situation like this to arise .
This is a grim reminder of the state of affairs of our country where in one corner a sepeatist leader openly sharesa dias with India’s most wanted terrorist and arrives back to to face the wrath of the Indian govt by being house arrested. India is soft on everyone be it terrorist or murderers or even for that matter rapists, but is quick to react when somebody voices their opinion on social media website.
Sadly this is the state of affairs of this so called “Banana Republic” now I guess rightly said by the country’s 1st son in law.and now adding diplomatic pressure on the Italian ambassador will do no good .
The Supreme court, the government and India has been insulted, now I’m waiting for ‘Argo part- 2’ to come telling on how the Indians were conned in order to save two of its marines by Italians.
